Book Slings // A New Pattern Release

Book Slings // PDF Pattern Review by: Handmade Frenzy

I met Terri of Blue House Joys a little while ago on IG, as most IG friends go, I don't remember exactly how it happened, haha. Terri makes amazing items that she sells in her shop to create the coziest reading nooks you can imagine!

Just this week, she released a pdf pattern for her book slings, so that if you're sewing savvy you can make your own, all the mathematical work already done for you!

She asked if I would like to give it a try to see if there were any kinks that needed to be worked out and I was happy to do so! I'd been wanting to make book slings for quite a while now. In fact, if I looked back at when I first pinned some for inspiration, I'll bet they are several years old.

I find with projects like this, the sewing is super simple, it's the math that always stops me from starting it. Not to say that I don't like math, I actually do, it's just that it's more time consuming than I'm willing to commit to most of the time. I LOVE grabbing a pdf file like this where all the work is done for you. All I had to do was grab my fabric, cut and sew!

I was actually in need of some new book solutions for the "big kid" books. It seems like with young children, there is constant rearranging and finding a new solution when an old one stops working as well. In our case, the books lost their old home (out of the baby's page ripping reach) when I tweaked my sewing room storage solutions. In other words. Fabric took over. Oops! :)

I made 2 "mini slings", Terri has 3 sizes included in the pdf, with the math all worked out for you. This allowed Olivia to stuff it full with her current favorites. The big kids share a room (you can see all the details here) and for now, this side is for her favorites, I plan to make 2 more mini's to hang behind the door directly opposite for Evan to be able to select his favorites and house them in the slings. This allows them to keep them safe from the little brother as well :) If you're wondering if the rest of the books found home, well they did, inside the closet in a teeny bookshelf that was repurposed from baby's room. Aiden has his own little book nook in another part of the house with a crate and baskets full of "baby safe" pages :)

I really enjoyed sewing these little slings. They are hung with double curtain rod brackets and 7/8" dowels, both of which can be found at most big box hardware stores. While the sewing was easy, I will just go ahead and make a public service announcement that I should not be allowed to use a drill. Just sayin'.

Make sure to check out Terri's shop for all your reading nook needs! She, along with her dad, also make brackets specifically to hang the book slings, they look amazing! And would probably have saved me some headaches with that the double curtain curtain rod bracket business.

  1. This is such a great idea! We are so limited for space that I'm always looking for pretty ways to store all my kids things. I love this!
