Roscoe Blouse & Union St. Tee // Sewing For Women

You can catch Part 1 of this post here!

Union St. Tee // Sewing For Women

Next in Part 2 of today's post, is the tried and true Union St. Tee. I've made quite a few of these, and come to think of it, they've all been v-necks. I do love me a good v-neck, and folks, Adrianna's instructions will make anybody a successful v-neck seamstress! I sewed this shirt first and really didn't have all that many issues with it. I was a bit nervous about sewing a perfectly lined up V in this rayon spandex, and I did end up using my seam ripper a few times, but I coaxed it into submission in the end and am super happy with the result!

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

Hello friends!!

I am in love with my new Hey June pattern-mashup! The Union St Tee is a definite staple pattern in my stash. I love using it to make regular tees of all kinds, but it's so easy to hack as well!! Click HERE to see all the versions I've blogged in the past!

{For a full link list - scroll to the bottom of the post}

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

Today I'm showing you only one of four Union St. Tees that I have made in the past few weeks. You saw my DIY Ciao Tee on the blog a couple of weeks ago, now here is one of the three versions I hacked/mashed with other Hey June Patterns!

This sweater was of course inspired, #sewrtwstyle, and I was mimicking a J.Crew version. Which is now sold out of course, but not for those of us who sew! 😉

This hack is so simple! I used my size medium tee pattern, crew-neck, long-sleeve options. Then I printed out a size medium hem band and sleeve cuffs from the Halifax Hoodie pattern.

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

To mash the patterns together, I simply shortened the shirt and sleeve hems to account for the added hem bands.

I would make a couple of small changes next time, one is to keep the sleeves a bit longer. 1 - 1 1/2 inches would be good, since when moving my arms around they tend to creep up on my wrists a bit. I guess I like my sleeves to be a little extra long. 😊

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

The other thing I would do is to narrow the hem band a little more. I didn't compare the measurements of the hoodie bodice to the tee bodice, and I'm guessing if I would have the tee would be narrower.

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

I also used a very lightweight rib knit for the hem band, which contributed to it being looser than I would have liked. Yes, I could probably unpick it and resew, but... 😏 If it bothers me enough, I will fix it, don't worry! But for now, I'm okay with it!

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

I can see, however, if I decide to layer shirts under, that I would like for it to be more fitted. So now, I think I'm talking myself into fixing it! 😆 Stay tuned. Lol.

Leopard Print Union St. Sweater // Sewing For Women

The fabric I used is from fabric.com {Telio Knit Knack Sweater Knit - affiliate link}. I just absolutely loved the print!! It's so good in person. It has decent stretch and really great recovery. I pre-washed and dried the fabric and it held up great! I've worn it for an entire day and I see no signs of pilling, especially under the arms, where things tend to pill the quickest.

I definitely grabbed enough to make at least one more thing with it, and I can't wait to get it sewn up soon!

The rib knit is from Walmart, and was on one of the 5yds for $5 bolts, so expect to see more of this too! 😃

I think I've covered all the details, but be sure to contact me if you have any more questions!

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Union St Tee // Emerson Shorts

Hi friends!!

I am talking all about some BASICS sewing today, AND there is a GIVEAWAY involved, too!! What a happy hump day it is! *Be sure to read to the end for the giveaway details!*

Mac and Katie (from Sew Altered Style) approached me a while back about participating in this tour, and of course I had to say yes! I have to admit. Sewing basics is kind of one of my favorite things, but not always the things I make time for! Can any of you relate?

There is something so innately satisfying about making something and then repeatedly reaching for it over and over because it's something that;

  • A. You love.
  • B. It's a staple wardrobe piece/builder.
  • C. It's something you made and feel pride in wearing.
But let's be honest. Sewing basics can seem sort of... boring. I mean, why not just grab a $5 tee at the nearest store and be on your way? Hmm. This can be a tough one! And I will admit, I do on occasion grab those tees! In fact, I just recently grabbed a few such tees. One reason was that I (along with many others) am having a hard time finding that 100% cotton, lightweight t-shirt knit that makes for the perfect slouchy tee.

The second reason was that I needed a specific tee for a specific reason and simply didn't have time to sew it up. That might sound silly, because tees are super quick sews, but life as a mom sometimes just is what it is and doesn't allow those extra minutes just when we need them!

Another reason this Back To Basics Week (actually the founding reason) is so timely, is that in just 6 days from today, starts the epic sewing-world event... Drum roll please... Me Made May!! Hellllo, that hashtag has been used over 50k times!

This is the third year that I will be participating in Me Made May and I am just so excited for all the camaraderie surrounding it. It's so much fun to see everyone's amazing handmade clothing.

While Me Made May is super exciting, it can also shine a direct spotlight on the gaps in our handmade wardrobes. So this year, I am getting a little head start and made a few basics that I knew I needed and would see a ton of wear, not just in May, but throughout the upcoming summer.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

You will not find me in jeans or pretty much pants of any kind in the summer once the heat sets in, so I made a THIRD pair of one of my all time favorite shorts patterns, the Emerson Shorts by True Bias.

I really can't say enough good things about this pattern. It's number one appeal for me is the comfort factor. Seriously, it can't get any better for a pair of woven shorts. But comfort isn't what drew me to the pattern initially, it was the design. I love the loose fit in the legs, the pleats and the slant front pockets. It all adds up to style AND comfort, which really can't be beat!

This is my third pair, and I sewed it up in some super lovely tencel denim from Joann Stores. And really, how much more basic does it get than denim!? This pair will be worn to threads, no doubt about it. I have a black pair (you can see here) and a light blue pair, both in rayon/linen that I already live in, and this pair will blend into the rotation seamlessly.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

The only change I made to the pattern this time around was to add 1-1/2" to the hem length. Otherwise I sewed a straight size 6, my current measurements are H-37.25, W-28.5.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

Up until about a month ago, I had several white tees in my closet. But the problem was... They weren't that white anymore. Ick. I really didn't even feel that bad getting rid of them because they had lived with me and served me well for 5+ years. It was time to let them go.

But then I had a white tee emergency and ran to Old Navy and bought, in all honesty, a perfectly good white v-neck tee! But like I said, I just got rid of at least 3 of them, so I'm in the restocking stage with my white tee stash.

The store-bought version of my white tee is a bit different from this one. The neckband on my Union St. Tee (Newest Version) is wider, the neckline is higher and I added the chest pocket. Also, the hem shape and length are different. This one is customized to me! And I'm super happy not to have the extra hem-length bunching up around my hips on this version.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Union St Tee // Emerson Shorts

I used white Laguna Jersey for this tee. It is a cotton/spandex blend that I purchased from Imagine Gnats a while back. Unfortunately it is out of stock, but the Dana Modal jerseys are an excellent alternative! I was super worried that the fabric would be too sheer for this shirt, but I'm happy to report, that with a skin-toned bra, it is perfecto. Good thing, because I have a couple more yards of this fabric to make a couple more basic white tees with different details!

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Union St Tee // Emerson Shorts

I went down a size to a size small on this pattern. I am super happy with the fit! The arms are a wee bit snug, so for the next one, I may go up a size in the arm width.

I also raised the v-neck 1/2" in the center front. You can view how I did this on my saved Instagram Stories, under Tutorials.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Union St Tee // Emerson Shorts

I find Hey June patterns to be pretty long on my 5'3" frame, so I took 1 inch out of the lengthen/shorten line and 1 inch off at the hemline. I haven't decided yet if this is the perfect length for me or not. For pairing with jeans, I feel like it's just smidge TOO short, so I may leave the 1 inch on the hemline next time.
Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Union St Tee // Emerson Shorts

Next up is another Hey June pattern, she's a go-to for basics patterns for sure!

This one is the ever popular Lane Raglan (in the updated version, for those of you who have owned the pattern for years like I have!).

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

I've made a few of these over the years, but unfortunately, the fabrics I used on the first two, did not hold up and I have since parted with them. I still have one that I wear mostly for yard work, because I'm not a huge fan of the colors I chose to color-block, and also, because it's just too long.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

So for this version, I kept it VERY basic. I went with a single fabric, rather than color-blocking and chose a pale peach color that I knew I would want to wear constantly this spring.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

I kept with my same pattern changes as the last time I made it. I went down a size to a small on the top, graded to a medium at the hips. This time however, I made some length mods. I took out 1" at the waistline and hemmed it at the band cut line, rather than adding the band.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

I used a lightweight french terry, also from Imagine Gnats, and it's the perfect spring top to pair with shorts! The fabric does not have a lot of stretch, so it is pretty close-fitting across the top, but not uncomfortably so. I'm just noting it to myself, because in a jersey with more stretch, this sizing is my perfect choice.

Back To Basics // Sewing For Women // Hey June Lane Raglan // Emerson Shorts

And those are the 3 basic pieces I'm going to be bringing into May with me! This will mix and match with the vast majority of my closet and that makes me super happy...

Now for the GIVEAWAY!!!

I am so super thrilled that I get to give one of you a $25 gift certificate to Imagine Gnats Shop!! DIY Anthropologie Inspired Ciao Tee // Tutorial // Sewing For Women

Happy Friday, friends!!

I am bursting with some exciting news for you today. First of all, I finished up this adorable Ciao Tee earlier this week, and I get to post about it!

DIY Anthropologie Inspired Ciao Tee // Tutorial // Sewing For Women

I used the Union St. Tee pattern by Hey June Handmade {aff link}, a linen blend jersey knit from Imagine Gnats, sold out, but there is currently a similar knit in the shop HERE.

DIY Anthropologie Inspired Ciao Tee // Tutorial // Sewing For Women

I made a size medium for a more oversized fit, shortened the bodice 1 inch, and otherwise sewed as per the pattern. My sweet spot with the Union St Tee is a size small for drapier knits, such as rayon or bamboo spandex jerseys. For knits with less stretch such as this linen blend jersey, or cotton knits with little to no spandex, I prefer to sew a medium and tuck or tie at the waist.

For reference, my measurements are B: 36", W: 29", H: 38". I could probably stand to grade down at the hips in a size medium, and that would eliminate the need to tuck or tie, but I'm a huge fan of that look so I'll probably just keep making them more oversized. 😊

DIY Anthropologie Inspired Ciao Tee // Tutorial // Sewing For Women

For the letters, I used scraps from another Union St. Tee that I will post about a little later (IT'S SO GOOD). I fused the letters to the tee using EZ-STEAM II {aff link}.

This brings me to the second part of my exciting news. I put together a little video to show you how to stitch around the edges of the letters in a way that won't pull and distort your delicate knits!

You can watch that on my IGTV channel right here in the post, or you can click HERE and watch it on the Instagram app!

Bear with me as I'm still learning with these IGTV videos. 😉 I feel quite amateur putting them together, but I'm finding out exactly what info I need to add/record/photograph, etc. So hopefully they will get better with time!

Regardless of all that, I'm super pleased with how my tee turned out! And I can now twin with my good friend, Teri! 😄 Click HERE to see what I mean!

Union St. Sweatshirt // Sewing For Women

Friday, October 14, 2016

I am subconsciously on a Union St. kick! The last 2 posts on the blog will prove that :)

I made these Chi-Town Chinos (which you can read all about HERE!) and decided they definitely needed a new shirt to pair with them. It is finally feeling like fall around here and I get to wear my fave combo of shorts and sweatshirts again!

I basically wanted an oversized super cozy long sleeved tee. So I grabbed these 2 fabrics from my stash and went to work.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

Hey friends!! I'm over at Imagine Gnats today sharing all about this adorable Lela Skirt by Sew DIY. The Lela Skirt is a recently redesigned version of the Baseball Skirt!

Head over to the post HERE to read all about it, and how I hacked it to look like a very famous Amazon skirt that has been showing up in all the style bloggers' wardrobes this summer. 😉 Another #sewrtwstyle make for sure!

{Source: @wishes_reality}

I'm doing my typical Imagine Gnats Day post a little differently today, in that, I'm going to talk you through all the many, MANY, ways I found to style this fun little skirt! And to be honest, I wasn't done styling, I was just dying from our current summer heat, so I decided I'd leave it at that, lol.

To start things off, the main outfit from today's Imagine Gnats post in entirely styled with my very own handmade items. And that makes me VERY happy! Since I showed a sneak peek on IG, I've already had several questions about this white button front tank, and I'm so excited to be able to share!!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

This is a new-to-me pattern, and also a new-to-me pattern company! I've been wanting to try out some Style Arc Patterns for quite a while, and in one of their most recent sales, I grabbed a few!

This tank is the Portia Woven Top pattern, and y'all. I'm in love!! I first made this pattern for an upcoming Minerva Crafts post (another VERY exciting thing!), and it worked perfectly for what I wanted it for. However, it had a slight fit issue on my body, that I remedied on this version and I love it SO MUCH!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The pattern doesn't include body measurements to choose your size, only finished garment measurements. (The body measurement chart is on their website, FYI.) So based on the finished measurements at the bust and waist, I chose a size 8. The fit was perfect through the bust and waist, but I really hadn't paid attention to the hip measurement, and it was snug in that area. I was definitely surprised, since my waist is a size larger than my hips, so a word of caution, check the hip measurements! 😄

To remedy the slightly snug hip area, I simply graded out the bottom of the hem by 1/2" on either side, and the fit is now spot on.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The top was also extremely long, I had shortened it 1 1/2" on my original version, and ended up shortening it another 2" for a total of 3 1/2" on this second version! To be fair I am only 5'3" tall, but I don't usually need to shorten quite that much.

I made one other slight change to this version. I decided to widen the straps a bit. So when cutting them out, I added 3/4" to the total width, which ends up 3/8" wider on the final product. It's great for concealing bra straps just a bit more! In these photos, I am wearing a strapless bra, but I will definitely also be wearing it with a regular bra, especially since I plan to pair it with cardigans come fall weather!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The fabric I used for the tank is actually a tablecloth that I snatched up from the Target clearance section! It's hard to see in these photos, but it has a glorious waffle texture in the fabric. It is 100% cotton, and I know it will just continue to soften with wear!

I just absolutely love this style of tank top so much, and I plan to make quite a few more of it! Probably with a few little hacks as well, so stay tuned!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The jean jacket is of course my Hampton Jean Jacket, that I blogged HERE. The hat is an Amazon purchase, and was found through @wishes_reality who also provided the skirt inspiration!

Now I will dive into each outfit I styled with links as much as possible, including the rtw items if still available, but since we all love to sew, I have pattern suggestions for you as well!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

This outfit is super simple, but just perfect for summer! Especially for keeping cool on our 95* days that we've been having!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The tank is a simple crew neck sleeveless top from Target. (Linked HERE) Made in rayon spandex, this top would be very simple to recreate based off of your favorite tee pattern, such as the Union St. Tee or the Panama Tee! The Taos Top would also be a great option, simply by switching out the mock neck with a neckband finish.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The bag I found at TJMaxx, and I've seen these exact ones at Marshall's as well. Amazon also offers tons of options, oh and Target as well! 😉

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

This next outfit is still very much summer time appropriate. I paired the Lela Skirt with a simple crew neck tee that I grabbed from Target this spring (for $5). I wish I could say it's a Union St. Tee, and hopefully someday it will be replaced by one! I also paired it with a fun summer straw tote from Old Navy, a simple gold coin necklace and some fave sandals from Target!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The vest is another iteration of my beloved Hampton Jean Jacket pattern (by Alina Design Co), and I blogged all about this make HERE.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

My next look is PERFECT for summer mom-life! Throw on a graphic tee, sneakers, a big bag for all the kids' STUFF and we're good to go!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

The graphic tee is from Old Navy, and the bag is the same as the one from the previous outfit. The shoes are old Chaps sneakers that I got at Kohl's.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

I also am wearing one of my very favorite hair clips that I snagged from Amazon. These are such fun accessories and for me serve a very practical purpose since I really don't like having my hair in my face! 😄

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

I also wanted to show how this skirt will transition perfectly into fall!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

I am LOVING this outfit oh so much!! I paired it with my very favorite Taos Top, blogged HERE. I just love the textures and color pairing here. Can it be fall now!!?? Lol.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

And for an extra layer that I know I'll need someday, but was melting in during these photos, I threw my Hampton Jean Jacket on top. The shoes are from Old Navy, which I linked, but it looks like they are sold out. I think they are bringing back a similar version though, so if you're interested, you can browse the current mule selection.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

I don't know if I can really pick a favorite outfit of the bunch, but this one is definitely a contender for the top!

My final look is another fall transitional outfit and I'm digging it as well!

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

My top is a mega pattern hack of the Lana Top by Coffee + Thread. I don't have a proper blog post of it because it was definitely not a fail (I love it), but an experiment, so much so that I can't really tell you all that I did to it! Lol.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

I added a long sleeve, tons of volume to the sleeve, and also widened the bodice and added a split hem detail.

Rayon Lela Skirt Styling Session // Sewing For Women

To gather in the waist to pair with the skirt, I used a clear hair elastic and created a faux knot. I love this trick! The booties are also old, and a Zulily find from several years ago. The hat is the same as I mentioned in the first look.

But there you have it!! 8 different variations of styling this adorable skirt!

I really hope you enjoyed this post, because I had so, so much fun styling it and taking the photos!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read!
