Color-Block Roller Skate Dress Flip

Whew. I got it done! My second flip for the Flip This Pattern series.

Flip This Pattern

I am now officially hooked on the series! It stretches my creativity and techniques too. I can't wait for some of the upcoming patterns on the schedule over the next year. I'm hoping I'll have time to sew along with each one! The pattern to flip this month is the Roller Skate Dress by Oliver & S.

I am pretty sure my sewing machine was bent on having me fail with this project. My not-so trusty machine has an appointment with the sewing machine doctor next week. Not sure what I'm going to do with myself while she's gone! Sniff, sniff... OH wait. Yes, the rest of my DIY list is screaming at me. I probably won't be bored.

Can I just tell you guys, though. I am in LOVE with this little dress!!

Color-block, boat-neck vibe, 3/4 sleeves, buttery soft knit. So many of my favorite things rolled into one!

Gah. Those little tippy toes and pudgy legs.

She was giving me great stuff to work with here. :)

I will tell you, my machine being all wonky and NOT cooperating with this knit (seriously, it tried to eat it more times than I can count), and my seam ripper and I becoming much too well acquainted, has me dreaming of a certain Bernina. I'm dreaming... And scrounging up all the loose change I can find, maybe it'll add up. In a few years. ;)

Ok. Now that you've been bombarded by cute-kid-in-a-cute-dress photos, let's talk about the dress a bit shall we?

What I did to "flip" this pattern:

  • I lowered the elastic waistline by 4 inches
  • Color-blocked (see more color-blocking here)
  • Added buttons to the shoulder seams to mimick a boat-neck
  • Used a snap closure in the back rather than a button and loop
  • Used knit fabric (since I used knit, I didn't line this dress so I made a simple facing for the neckline)
  • Eliminated the faux cap sleeves and added set-in 3/4 length sleeves

I made a casing for the elastic in the seam allowance between the purple and cream fabric.

The first dress I made was WAY too big for my little miss, so for this dress, I cut out a 12-18 month. I expected there to still be extra room with this size, and there is, but I'm very happy that the neckline fits much better. There is definitely plenty of room for her to grow which I am happy with since our weather will probably not be cool enough for her to wear this dress for quite a while yet and I'm expecting her to grow a bit before then.

She did love it and even did a bit of twirling :) When I first tried it on her, she oohed and aahed about her new "coat". Apparently anything with semi-long sleeves is a coat to her.

Let's accessorize, because, why not!?!

Every girl needs a little animal print in an outfit.

And an oversized flower too!

So without really intending to, I've made her two new dresses for the fall/winter season. Now I have something to look forward to when the cold weather hits :)

Keepin' it real...

And since it's Kid's Clothes Week right now, this is my first, hopefully not only, contribution. Only it took alot more than an hour a day to complete... Blah. Hoping that my sewing machine will be good as new next week!

Happy Sewing!!
