Recess Raglans x2 - KCW Winter 2014 - Day 1
For the first time ever, I'm truly participating in Kids Clothes Week! And WOW! It is FUN. Last week, I planned, printed patterns, chose fabrics and even cut out a few shirts. Three Recess Raglans were in the plans, and I managed to get all of those cut out, so those are the first to hit the machine this week. And at the bottom of the post, I'll share a tip for hemming knits that I learned!
I have been dying to try this pattern by See Kate Sew, and it did not disappoint! So easy to put together and such a fabulous outcome. Really, I couldn't be happier with how these 2 shirts came together, it makes me feel so happy when a garment leaves my machine looking so... store bought?!?? :) It also helps that my Bernina 350PE has some awesome stretch stitches. If you are looking for a machine that does well with knits, I can vouch for that one!
Part of the KCW plan for me this year was also to upcycle clothing and turn them into wearables for my kiddos. Not only does it make me feel good that I'm saving money this way, but the best part of it is the time saved if you can save original hems!
This fabric is very lightweight and drapey. And while I wouldn't have immediately chose it for boys if I had seen it in person first, it is actually PERFECT. E hardly ever chooses to wear long sleeves, even when it's freezing, because, he's 4. And NEVER holds still. He always tells me, "Mom, I don't WANT to wear that, it just makes me SWEATY!!" :) But this is lightweight and oh so soft, when I put it on him to check the size, he asked, "Can I wear it all day!!??" While lightweight and slippery knit isn't my first choice to work with, I do think I'll be using it more often for my active boy who doesn't like to be SWEATY.
His, I don't want to take these picturespout pose.

The second Recess Raglan I sewed up, I chose to make short sleeved. And I LOVE this one too!
Just for fun I threw in a little tag at the raglan seam. My husband thought it was a little odd. Oh well...

And now for the tip I've learned for hemming knits to avoid getting wavy hems!
It is this magic stuff and a double needle:
I first learned about it from this super helpful post. And it couldn't be easier to use. Just steam it on and you're good to go!
Well I'm off to get to more sewing!!
I'll be back soon to show you even more KCW fun!
I have got to get my hands on that knit tape!!! The tag along the seam…awwwesooome! Not odd at all. :)
ReplyDeleteOh that knit tape... It is so amazing!! It may seem a little pricey but it will go a looong way. Thanks for the confidence vote on the tag, I thought it was cool... Husbands... lol :)
