Banyan Tee For The Boy

Banyan Tee for boys - Pattern by Figgy's. Sewn by Handmade Frenzy

Hi guys!

I have been dying to sew the Banyan Tee for almost as long as I have been sewing. In fact I love the whole Figgy's shop! So when Shelly contacted ME, (little ol' me!!!) about if I wanted to sew up some of her patterns, my fingers could not type YESSSSSS!! fast enough. That is, after I stopped jumping up and down long enough to sit down and type. ;)

So about the tee...

I have been trying to sew up more "basics" for my kids. I mean, in reality that is what they live in, and if I spend so much time making a garment, even if I do it mostly because I enjoy it, I still want them get as much wear as possible out of the things I make them. And there is something extra fun about doing laundry if it is full of clothes that I love, and even more so if it's something that I can say I made. I'm a maker. I can't help it :)

And that is exactly what I love about the Banyan Tee.

It is a staple. It is a basic wardrobe essential, but with details that make it stand out from the usual tee.

I am drawn to details. I love simple, basic style, but with a twist.

As far as the pattern itself, it was awesome! Putting together pdf patterns can sometimes be a bit frustrating, but the way the tiling is done with these patterns is so great. The lines match up Per.Fect.Ly. And so easily! Susan from Crafterhours wrote a great post about how to print and tile pdf patterns simply and quickly. I was already cutting off the same 2 sides of my pieces and then tiling, but I quickly switched from scissors to a paper cutter after reading that post! Go here to check it out if you want to save yourself some precious sewing time.

I still prefer using tape to put them together rather than glue though, just works better for me for some reason. To keep the papers from shifting while taping I use my pattern weights.
(I totally had a photo to go with that rabbit trail but it got deleted by accident. *SIGH***)

So back to the shirt :)
The only change I made was to accommodate my skinny little man's comfort level. He fell into the 4/5 size chart and the overall fit is spot on. But the neck was a little wide for him, it kept slipping to one side of his shoulders. His shoulders are pretty narrow, so this is a problem that occurs occasionally, even in RTW. He was constantly tugging at it and slouching his shoulders and it was driving me as crazy as it was him :) So to help with that I doubled the width of the neckband and took an inch and a half out of the length. It worked! But next time I will try leaving it the same width and taking out 2" of the length. This does depend on the stretchiness of the fabric though. This was a pretty stretchy jersey.

I LOVE this pattern with striped fabric! The bias cut pocket and neckband are just awesome. And the cuff on the sleeves is another detail that makes me swoon.

The fabric is from an xl men's shirt I thrifted from our local Goodwill. They sometimes have Target's "leftovers" from their clearance section. This was one of those, so it was brand new. Great fabric, low price, happy me.

10 points if you know where that quote is from :)
