Handmade Summer Series Part 7: Banded Shorts

I am so in love with these shorts! :) I used this free pattern and tutorial.

Since my girlie is 19 months, I cut the pattern about 1/4" smaller all around and they fit her perfectly. For the leg bands, I originally cut those smaller on the diameter and they fit fine, but the poor girl couldn't lift her legs very high, because the band got too tight around her thighs. It frustrated her SO BAD! :) (She tends to be a bit dramatic) So I re-did them and used the pattern size for the bands, I did shorten them about a 1" so the overall length wouldn't be quite as long.

Now she can move and climb and dance. And she loves them!! Yay!!

Now let's talk about the fabric. I love Ikea. Do you love Ikea? I also love their as-is section! And this fabric, well you can probably guess, came from the as-is section. In it's original life it was a pillowcase. And a pillowcase that only cost $1!!! I was so excited when I saw it. I snatched it up immediately. I really didn't know yet what I was going to do with it, but I knew it would be something!

When I saw this shorts pattern, I knew the pillowcase and the pattern were destined for each other. Technically, these shorts should have cost me only $.50 for the fabric, the pattern used only 1/2 of the pillowcase, BUT, I cut the pattern wrong the first time :( Then I had to remake the leg bands as well... Thank goodness, it was a generous sized pillowcase! :) Still, $1 for fabric for these shorts is pretty good!!!

My little model.

  6. I tried that free pattern last summer for my then 4 year old and they are cute but I totally agree they are a little slim around the leg when you add the cuff. I used the size she recommended but they just fit! They didn't get worn much, not comfortable enough for my girl. Yours are cute and I am glad your girl loves them!
